Como nunca había sucedido en la historia este año se registro un total de 85 películas extranjeras inscritas en la competición, todas lleas buscando llegar a la ceremonia de la premiación y ser una de las que conformen la terna final para obtener el Premio de la academia de ciencias y artes cinematográficas de Estados Unidos a Mejor película Extranjera.

En un año súper competido destacan, It’s only the end of the world de Xavier Dolan y representando a Canada, Neruda de Pablo Larraín que representa a Chile, Elle de Paul Verhoeven que representa a Francia y Julieta de Pedro Almodóvar que representa a España. Lo triste es que a México lo representa Desierto, la cinta del hijo de Alfonso Cuaron, Jonas Cuaron, y a la cual no se le ve un futuro muy prometedor.
